The Winery at Bull Run Wedding Film

Erin + Bryan

Our team here at Whole Heart Studios has had an the opportunity to work with some amazing couples in 2017 already and we have even more to look forward to. One of these truly amazing couples have been Erin + Bryan!

What we love most about the process of working with our couples is getting to know them and sharing stories with one another throughout our time together (+ beyond)! Anyone who knows or has the pleasure to meet Erin + Bryan would know that they are meant for one another simply by the way in which they look at each other with such adoration and love. However, when I heard this sweet couple's relationship journey and engagement story - I knew with such a great feeling that these two were undeniably MADE for one another! A blind (double)date and an engagement on the top of a cliff overlooking a beautiful lake? That's Erin + Bryan! Friends - our team here at Whole Heart Studios are so happy for this amazing couple that now call one another husband and wife. And to Erin + Bryan - thank you for choosing us to capture your special day together and for not only being wonderful clients, but amazing friends! Congratulations to this sweet duo on forever!

Interested in why Erin + Bryan chose The Winery at Bull Run? Read what they had to say below!

"The first time we went to The Winery at Bull Run was the weekend after Bryan moved up to Virginia to live with me. I was super excited and wanted to celebrate by planning a fun weekend getaway. He loves Dogfish beer so I decided to plan a trip up there on Saturday, then on the way back we hit up some wineries so I chose The Winery at Bull Run mostly out of convenience but we ended up having SO much fun and loving it! Fast forward to one year later, when we were deciding on wedding venues - Bryan said, 'Do you remember that winery we went to in Northern Virginia after Dogfish? We should look into that!'" - Erin

Erin loved that Bryan remembered the winery and the couple immediately revisited and booked the venue for their wedding day! Believe it or not, The Winery at Bull Run was the only venue that they actually looked into for their big day - because it was just that perfect for the two of them.

Maryland Wedding

Kristi + Brian

Hi guys! This week for #weddingwednesday we're so excited to share Kristi + Brian's unique wedding that took place on a gorgeous October day in Harwood, Maryland. After days of dark skies (following the hurricane) this sweet couple woke up to a slightly cool morning with a clear and sunny sky. It was simply obvious that the adverse weather had cleared up just for Kristi + Brian's special day - it was perfect.

These two are very remarkable people and immeasurably meant for one another. With their own kind of uniqueness that they bring to the table, along with their traditional styles, they were able to incorporate so much of the things that they both love and create the most phenomenal design for this incredible day in their lives.

Complete with hay bail furniture, games, and even a fire pit for s'mores - Kristi + Brian definitely pulled off the "shabby chic with a vintage flair" wedding design flawlessly.

The team here at Whole Heart Studios had a ton of fun capturing Kristi + Brian's special day. The couple, along with their family members and friends, simply had a wonderful day that was filled with love, laughter, and lots of dancing. We wish Kristi + Brian a lifetime of love - filled with travel, adventure, and fun. Always #spreadthelove!

Valerie + Andy | Washington D.C. Wedding | DMV Wedding Photography and Cinematography

Wedding Wednesday | Washington D.C. Elegance

Wedding Photography

Washington D.C. is so beautiful and us here at Whole Heart Studios absolutely loved taking Valerie and Andy's wedding photos there. Thinking we were in for a gorgeous fall day of sunshine and exploration, we headed to D.C. with cameras in hand. Truth be told, it was windy and it was cold - very very cold. We have to give a huge shout out to Valerie and Andy for being such champions and braving the weather on this day in order to capture theses gorgeous wedding photos.

Valerie and Andy are a perfect couple, with an adorable baby girl - Oriana, that share such a sweet love. We can't get over how well these two fit together and how much they compliment one another in every way. I mean, look at the way that they gaze at each other. It is simply perfect, isn't it?

We love the elegance of Washington D.C. and how the city correlates with Valerie and Andy's style. Valerie's bright bouquet was beautifully crafted by Charlotte with Charlotte Jarrett Events. Charlotte offers floral design as a service along with wedding planning and she is phenomenal at everything that she does. Check out a detailed photo of Valerie's bouquet below. Be sure to also swing by Charlotte's website and see her wonderful work for yourself.

Emily + Jeremy | A Mountain Lake Lodge Wedding | DMV Wedding Photography and Cinematography

Mr. and Mrs. Sanders | Mountain Lake Married

Wedding Photography

At Whole Heart Studios, every wedding that we photograph and film takes our breath away - leaving us speechless in one way or another. Not only does the love shared between Emily and Jeremy astound us, but the destination of their wedding impacted our hearts and minds. They chose a very unique and exciting venue - Mountain Lake Lodge. The very popular movie, Dirty Dancing was filmed here in 1986! How interesting and cool?! The gorgeous Mountain Lake Lodge is located in Pembroke, Virginia. We love locations that have character, and Mountain Lake Lodge sure does! High up in the mountains of this cozy mountain lodge, the sun peaked over the gorgeous mountains bright and early, indicating and setting the mood for the entirety of the day.

Emily wrote Jeremy letters each day that led up to their big wedding day, and their exchange of words behind those writings are a testament of how they will uphold their vows with one another for the rest of their lives. We became friends with the two of them during the whole process of getting to know the couple and documenting their day, which truly allowed us to let our creative juices flow and craft the most memorable wedding film possible to provide them a lifelong memory. To view Emily and Jeremy's whole wedding film, click here.

Emily and Jeremy are an incredible couple that thrive off each other’s energy and love for one another, which emanates into the lives of their family and friends. We really pushed ourselves for a variety of different shots and ideas, and Emily and Jeremy were completely receptive to everything we had in mind. The icing on the wedding cake was our adventure to the top of the mountain where we captured some breathtaking footage of them at the edge of the cliff face - twinkling sunset and all. Us here at Whole Heart Studios feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to film and photograph The Sanders' special day. It was a remarkable experience filled with sweet memories that we will never forget. View the Sanders' Wedding Film here.

Ana + Brendan | CrossFit Couple | DMV Wedding Photography and Cinematography

Titan CrossFit + Oregon Ridge Nature Center

Engagement Photography

At Whole Heart Studios, we love capturing couples that share interests and hobbies together. Ana and Brendan both share a love of traveling, CrossFit, and most importantly – one another. Since this sweet couple met at CrossFit, they chose to have some of their engagement photos taken there! How cool is that? Ana and Brendan also had us take some traditional photos at Oregon Ridge Nature Center, and we love the way those turned out – especially since it ended up being a beautiful fall afternoon with tons of colorful leaves and a striking sunset.

When Ana and Brendan shared with us that they were interested in having some of their engagement photos taken at Titan CrossFit in Maryland – we were super excited (and I think it is safe to say that they were too) because we had so much in mind. We were able to capture everything – kettlebell ring photos, action shots, and believe it or not we were even able to snag a few photos of Brendan bench-pressing Ana! Okay, maybe that one was tricky – but we definitely made it happen and we absolutely love the way they all turned out.

Ana and Brendan then had us take their more traditional photos at Oregon Ridge Nature Center and the park there was stunning. At the time of their engagement session, autumn had just settled in (thankfully) and we were provided with beautiful hues of red and orange along the tree line. This made for a remarkable evening and we wouldn’t have asked for a better time or location to capture the soon-to-be Murphy’s engagement photos of them sharing their love.

Us here at Whole Heart Studios had a blast at Ana and Brendan’s engagement session and we can already tell that their September wedding will be a very exciting wedding in late 2017!

Whole Heart Studios recently had the pleasure of getting together a perfect style shoot in downtown Richmond Virginia. Brides in the Richmond area love to get images that show of their city and we hope these images hit home for their hearts.

It’s easy to get great images with character when you have amazing backdrops like The Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing, Libby Hill Park and the Historic Tredegar. Richmond is FULL of so much history, all while growing so fast!

Telling Stories through Film - Meet Carl Jocumsen

Here’s something that might surprise you—we don’t just film weddings!  We actually do commercial work as well, and one group of people that we absolutely love working with is fishermen!  That’s right, our owner Bill is a huge fishing enthusiast and earlier this month had the honor of fishing with and filming Bassmaster Elite Angler Carl Jocumsen.  Carl came to the United States from Australia six years ago to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a professional fisherman.  And you know what?  He did it.

Out on the water with Carl, Bill had the opportunity to film some amazing aerial footage of Carl’s Basscat.  Powered by a mean Yamaha Sho motor, Carl’s boat tears through the water of the James River as he practices for the 2016 Bassmaster Northern Open.  One of the things that we really love about Carl (besides his sweet Aussie accent) is that fishing isn’t just a career for him—it’s a way to inspire others to achieve their dreams.  You see, back in Australia, Carl was just a teenager when bass fishing became popular.  He started fishing competitively early on and working in a tackle shop to save money.  Almost a decade later, Carl had saved up enough money and made the brave decision to leave it all behind in Australia and come to America with just his backpack and his dream.  And through hard work and dedication, Carl has now made fishing into more than just a dream—it’s his career.

Carl’s ability to achieve his dreams has made him want to inspire others to do the same.  He has had some amazing opportunities to take people out on the water and show them that fishing can provide a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of solace, and the joy of comradery with nature.  Even though Carl didn’t have the finish he hoped for on the James River this summer, we know he has the drive, passion and skill to make a major comeback.  Wishing him the best of luck as he heads to Wisconsin for his next tournament!

Wedding Engagement Photo Shoots--Bring Your Pet!

A lot of couples think of an engagement shoot as just the two of them, but if you are a couple with pets, consider bringing him, her, or them(!) along.  After all, pets are a part of your family and will be a big part of your married life together!  Plus, they are so darn cute.  If you do decide to bring your pet(s) along, here are some tips we’ve learned from our pet-friendly engagement shoots!

  1. Bring treats and/or toys

Not every pet likes getting their picture taken.  In fact, your pet probably has no clue what a camera is or does and so therefore doesn’t realize he or she needs to stare right at it (or at least in the camera’s general direction).  And so, we deploy the secret weapon—distractions.  Bring your pet’s favorite toy or treat so that we can hold it near/around the camera, drawing your pet’s attention right where it needs to be!

  2. Bring a leash/carrier

Even if your pet is the best-behaved pet in the whole world, he or she may get tired, restless, or just plain bored.  If you are planning on doing an hour or longer shoot, there will most likely come a time when your pet needs to take a break and do their own thing.  If you bring a leash or carrier, your pet can “chill” right nearby (with their favorite treat/toy from Tip 1) while we snap a few photos of just the humans.

  3. Primp your pet

Consider grooming Fluffy before your shoot.  You’re probably going to dress yourself up for your photos, so don’t forget your pets want to look good too!  Even something simple like a bath and brushing can go a long way in terms of making your pet look so fresh and so clean-clean in your professional engagement photos.  If your pet is of the non-furry variety (like the family iguana or something), well, maybe skip the brushing.

If you are considering bringing a pet (or pets) to your engagement session, just make sure to let your photographer know.  We love animals and are happy to work with you and your pets in an animal-friendly location to produce some awesome engagement photos!

Wedding Video: Don't regret not having one

Wedding Video can change the way you remember your wedding--for the better

Here at Whole Heart Studios, we may be a little biased when we tell you that hiring a wedding videographer will make your wedding day a million times better.  But take it from the experts (and these statistics)--the best way to remember one of the best days of your life is by watching it from the eyes of your closest family and friends.

These days, almost every wedding couple hires a professional photographer.  Yet some are still afraid to spend the extra cash on a videographer.  Here's why it pays to hire someone to document your amazing day on film:

1. Brides recommend it and regret not having it

This article from The Knot features tons of feedback from brides that say wedding video is an absolute MUST!  From remembering relatives that are no longer with us to being able to relive all of the moments that you may have missed, having a professional wedding videographer at your wedding can make your memories of your day last for decades!

Another article from Brides lists not having a videographer as one of the 7 biggest regrets from a couples' wedding day.  Nobody wants to regret something from their wedding day.  Hire a videographer and spend time enjoying reliving your amazing memories instead of regretting something that could have been!

2.  Highlight films are a quick easy way for everyone to relive your day

In this age of social media, we can share moments with each other just by clicking a button.  Huffington Post lists wedding highlight films as one of the top trends of 2016.  Why?  Because a highlight film is a short film that is quickly produced and that you can share on Facebook, via email, on your personal website, etc.  Let family and friends relive a few minutes of your day with you while the memories are still fresh!  Plus, guests that were unable to attend can see the amazing moments that they missed.  Most couples will also opt for a longer film as well that usually takes a bit longer to create and can be shared later on!

3. Audio makes all the difference

One of our favorite reasons for hiring a wedding videographer is from this Wedding Wire article--it's the fact that you can actually hear your day played back for you.  You will be able to not only watch but also listen your vows, the toasts, your first dance song, and so much more.  A wedding film will give you the opportunity to listen to an older relative's voice again, even after they have passed on.  It will let you hear the laughter of a best friend, even after you have moved far away.  It will give you the opportunity to listen to your spouse promise their love to you, even decades after your magical day.

So if you're considering hiring a wedding videographer for your special day, do it!!  And if you're not, please think again.  We promise it will be worth it to be able to watch and listen to the most amazing moments of your wedding day for so many years to come.

Creative Cakes for your wedding day

Awesome wedding cake ideas from the experts.  (Trust us, we've eaten a lot of wedding cake.)

Okay, let's face it.  Wedding cake is pretty important.  Your guests love you, and they want to celebrate your love, but they also are expecting some pretty awesome dessert at the end of the day.  Whether or not you and your new spouse mash that dessert into each other's faces in front of everyone is a different story.

As one of Maryland's premier wedding photography and cinematography companies, our crew has been to a lot of weddings, and you know what that means--we've eaten a lot of wedding cake!  Here are some of the most awesome cakes we've photographed and filmed (and devoured):

1. Donut cake!

That's right, it was a cake made of donuts.  Duck Donuts from North Carolina, to be exact!  And they were delicious.  The frosting even matched the wedding colors--white, pale pink, and navy donuts arranged on a tiered platter made this wedding dessert one of a kind!

2. Cupcake cake!

This seems to be a new trend, but we don't hate it!  This Minneapolis wedding featured delicious cupcakes in addition to a small traditional wedding cake.  The best part about cupcakes?  You can have a bunch of different flavors, which means it's easier to please everyone's taste buds!

3. Pie!

Hey, not everybody likes cake.  We filmed a North Carolina wedding where the couple served dozens of different pies--coconut, caramel apple, pecan--and they were all amazing!
